Our technology

Six characteristics that define BioKey technology — from the sensor and management to recognition by insurers.

01 Line sensor Why the finger is swiped

Because of the layer of grease on the skin, a flat touch surface leaves a visible print that could, under certain circumstances, be lifted and misused. With a line sensor, the finger is swiped rather than placed: the wiping motion smears the greasy trace automatically, so no usable print is left behind — an approach that EU guidelines for biometric access systems also provide for.

Touch surface: the finger is pressed onto the glass surface and lifted off again; a greasy print with clearly visible ridges is left behind.

Touch surfaceThe finger is placed on it — the greasy trace stays behind.

Line sensor: the finger rests in the finger guide and is drawn downwards across the narrow sensor line; the device reads it line by line as it does so. Only a structureless haze is left on the sensor, not a usable print. Evaluation in the device

Line sensorThe finger is swiped — the movement wipes the trace away again.

Schematic comparison of the two sensor types.
  • The small sensor surface offers little to attack for vandals.
  • Less sensitive to rain, snow and dirt than a large touch surface.
  • The sensor cleans itself with every use.
  • A sensor that prevents fingerprints from being left behind is one of the five security criteria the VdS sets for fingerprint systems.
02 Touch-and-Go AI function Recognition even with a dirty or wet finger

The most exciting convenience feature of BioKey technology: thanks to integrated artificial intelligence, the door recognises your finger even when it is dirty, wet or slightly injured in everyday life.

Touch-and-Go: a dirty or wet finger is swiped across the sensor. The captured image is patchy and stays below the recognition threshold. The paired smartphone in the pocket responds via Bluetooth, the threshold drops and the lock opens. Evaluation in the device Threshold

Touch-and-GoThe finger is swiped as usual.

The paired smartphone stays in the trouser pocket and responds via Bluetooth.

Smartphone in your pocketPaired via Bluetooth — it stays where it is.

Schematic view: if the paired smartphone is nearby, the recognition threshold drops — the door is still opened with the finger.

If recognition doesn't succeed straight away, the AI checks in the background against the Bluetooth-paired smartphone in your pocket. If it is nearby, recognition is made easier and the door opens intuitively — Touch-and-Go, without you having to take out your phone.

The finger is always still required. The paired smartphone does not replace it and does not open the door on its own — it merely lowers the threshold at which a fingerprint counts as recognised.

  • Works with dirt, moisture or minor injuries.
  • Your smartphone stays in your pocket.
  • No second attempt, no taking out your phone.

03 No cloud Everything stays at the door

Many fingerprint systems are permanently connected to the internet — convenient, but a risk: server outages or forced updates can affect access to your own door. BioKey technology therefore deliberately dispenses with cloud- or Wi-Fi-based remote opening and works entirely locally at the door.

  • The pairing between the outdoor unit and the relay unit uses a dedicated, secured procedure — independent of the internet or third-party providers.
  • The app connects exclusively via a 128-bit encrypted Bluetooth connection right at your own door, without transmitting data to a server.
  • Independent of server outages, internet connection and forced software updates.
  • As no server infrastructure has to be operated, there are no subscriptions and no running costs.
04 Master finger Management without a PC or an app

Instead of using a PC or complicated software, BioKey devices are managed directly at the door: new users are added or removed using only your own, already enrolled fingers — the master finger. Neither a computer nor an app is needed.

If you prefer to manage things more conveniently, you can also use the BioKey app — both ways work side by side, depending on what is more practical day to day. The introductory video and the instructions in the Service section show the exact procedure.

05 App management Convenience via Bluetooth, if desired

The BioKey app is optional convenience, not a requirement. It connects exclusively via a 128-bit encrypted Bluetooth connection right at your own door — not via a server.

  • Open the door by phone or by code
  • Open via a quick-access widget or from an Apple/Android watch
  • Create users and manage permissions
  • View the access log
  • Configure relay times and device settings
06 VdS / insurance Recognised by insurers

A test procedure recognised by VdS Schadenverhütung confirms resistance to false matches, event memory and tamper protection. BioKey technology is part of various VdS certifications (class A/B and 1/2) for securing doors, safes and gun cabinets.

  • Resistance to false matches of at least 1 : 1,000,000 — equivalent to the security of a 6-digit PIN.
  • Event memory for at least 100 events with timestamps — the evidence without which a break-in is often not recognised for insurance purposes.
  • Lockout mechanism after 5 unauthorised access attempts at the latest.
  • Potted, weather-resistant housing of the outdoor unit — VdS climate test passed.
